Role summary

Rippling's Fintech Platform is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build and scale systems for global payroll and money movement. This role involves designing and developing high-integrity distributed systems for critical financial operations like payroll calculations, payments, ledgers, reconciliation, and risk controls. The engineer will create country-agnostic platform primitives, build robust APIs, and solve complex problems related to high-volume financial data and integrations. The position also includes mentoring engineers and improving engineering practices. Experience in fintech or financial infrastructure is a plus.

About the Fintech Platform

Rippling’s Fintech Platform builds the systems that make global payroll and money movement accurate, reliable, and scalable. We turn complex workforce, payroll, tax, compliance, and banking data into payments for employees, tax authorities, and entities worldwide.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will join the Fintech Platform organization and be matched to a team based on your experience and business needs. Teams own foundational capabilities such as payroll orchestration, payment execution, ledgers, reconciliation, treasury, risk, and global compliance.

This is systems work where correctness is tangible: the software you build helps ensure people are paid accurately and on time.

What you will do (focus on one or multiple areas below):

  • Design, build, and scale backend systems that power global payroll and payments infrastructure.
  • Develop high-integrity systems for payroll calculations, filings, ledgers, payment orders, reconciliation, treasury, and risk controls.
  • Create country-agnostic platform primitives that can support local tax, compliance, banking, and payroll requirements across many regions.
  • Build APIs and integration layers that ingest complex customer, partner, payroll-provider, banking, and compliance data with strong correctness guarantees.
  • Solve distributed-systems problems involving high-volume financial data, state transitions, retries, and integrations with banks, payroll providers, and regulatory partners.
  • Partner closely with product, design, operations, compliance, payroll experts, and payments teams to turn ambiguous business problems into robust technical systems.
  • Mentor other engineers and raise the engineering bar through technical design, code quality, operational rigor, and clear ownership.

What you will need

  • Strong backend engineering experience building scalable, production-grade systems.
  • Experience designing distributed systems, APIs, data models, event-driven workflows, or financial infrastructure.
  • Strong engineering judgment around failure modes, data integrity, observability, and operational response.
  • Experience leading complex technical projects and mentoring engineers.
  • Interest in fintech or financial infrastructure; experience with payments, payroll, banking, tax, treasury, ledgers, reconciliation, or regulated systems is a plus.
  • Familiarity with technologies such as Go, Python, TypeScript, React, Spark, Flink, MongoDB, Kafka, Kubernetes, Terraform, or AWS is helpful, but not required.

Direct Fintech experience is nice to have but not required.

Valid Word Abbreviation Determine if a string matches a valid word abbreviation. Input: word = "apple", abbr = "a2e" Output: FALSE Explanation: The abbreviation claims exactly 2 characters are skipped between 'a' and 'e', but "ppl" is actually 3 characters long.

Clone an Undirected Graph Clone an undirected graph. Input: adjList = [[]] Output: [[]] Explanation: Creates a new, deeply cloned graph containing only one single node with zero connected neighbors.

Split Array into Consecutive Subsequences Split an array into consecutive subsequences. Input: nums = [1,2,3,4,4,5] Output: FALSE Explanation: The numbers can form [1,2,3,4], but the remaining leftover group [4,5] is too short to form a valid sequence of length 3.
