Role summary

The Tool Design Engineer is responsible for designing and modifying fixtures, gauges, and cutting tools using CAD systems. This role involves creating solid models and detailed drawings, ensuring proper dimensioning and tolerancing according to ASME standards. The engineer will also perform basic process engineering tasks, including BOM and routing creation, process documentation, debugging manufacturing processes, and CNC/CAM programming. Collaboration with NPD Process and Product Engineers is key to optimizing designs for manufacturing quality, cost, fit, and function. A strong understanding of CNC machining capabilities and standard/special cutters is required, along with experience in file management and SAP for BOM/routing updates. A preferred background includes 15+ years of CAD experience, high-level fixture/gage/cutter design, and peer checking responsibilities.

Tool Design Engineers design fixtures, gauges and cutting tools from written tool design request (TDR). Operate Computer Aided Design (CAD) system to create solid model assemblies and fully dimensioned detail tool design drawings. Tool design skills must be utilized to properly dimension and tolerance fixtures, gauges and cutters so they produce product design parts to print by either direct or derived resultant dimensions. They need to evaluate new and existing manufacturing operations to fully understand and to optimize their designs. Tool Design Engineers do basic Process Engineering activities such as part BOM and routing, establish process documentation, debugging manufacturing processes, CNC/CAM Programming and other engineering duties as needed.
