About The Role
We are seeking an experienced and motivated DevOps Engineer to join our team supporting the development, deployment, and operation of modern web and scientific applications at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the NIH. This full-time role offers the flexibility of remote work within the US or on-site presence in Rockville, MD. As a DevOps Engineer, you will work at the intersection of software engineering, cloud infrastructure, and scientific research, collaborating closely with software developers, bioinformaticians, and domain experts. Your primary responsibilities will include deploying and managing cloud resources, automating infrastructure, and ensuring the security and reliability of critical scientific applications. This role requires a proactive approach, technical expertise, and a keen understanding of cloud-based systems, security protocols, and automation tools to support cutting-edge research initiatives.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field OR a high school diploma (or equivalent) with an AWS Certified DevOps Engineer certification and five (5) years of relevant professional experience
  • Minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience using Terraform for infrastructure as code
  • At least four (4) years of relevant professional experience in DevOps or cloud engineering roles
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and maintaining Hashicorp Configuration Language (HCL) with Terraform
  • Experience with GitHub Actions for CI/CD automation
  • Strong scripting skills in Python and Bash (or similar scripting languages)
  • Comprehensive knowledge of AWS cloud services and offerings
  • Hands-on experience with Docker containerization
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and command-line tools
  • Experience reviewing and responding to security vulnerability reports
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Federal or DoD Public Trust clearance; existing clearance preferred

Responsibilities

  • Deploy, configure, and manage cloud infrastructure using Terraform, ensuring scalable and reliable environments
  • Read, utilize, and contribute to existing in-house Hashicorp configuration language (HCL) codebases
  • Monitor and manage AWS cloud-based infrastructure to maintain optimal performance and security
  • Collaborate with development teams to understand project specifications and implement appropriate cloud solutions
  • Learn and adhere to in-house CI/CD automation processes and best practices
  • Ensure security boundaries are maintained, particularly concerning Publicly Identifiable Information (PII), and respond to vulnerabilities proactively
  • Write and maintain automation scripts in Python and Bash to support deployment and operational activities
  • Review security vulnerability reports and implement necessary mitigations
  • Participate in team meetings, provide technical guidance, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives
  • Maintain documentation related to infrastructure, automation processes, and security protocols
