Job Description

Build Products That Help Advance Life-Saving Science

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, your engineering work can have an impact far beyond the products you design. Our technologies help customers develop and manufacture biologics, vaccines, and other therapies that improve lives around the world.

We are looking for a R&D Engineer I, Mechanical to join our Single-Use Technologies team in Logan, Utah.

This is a hands-on opportunity where you'll help take products from concept → prototype → test → commercialization, as well as sustain existing products. You'll solve meaningful mechanical and system-level engineering challenges while working with engineers, scientists, manufacturing, quality, and other technical teams.

If you enjoy designing real products, solving complex mechanical problems, building and testing prototypes, and ultimately seeing something you designed move into production, this could be a great next step in your engineering career.

Location: On-site in Logan, UT. Relocation assistance is NOT provided.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
  • Must be able to pass a comprehensive background check, which includes a drug screening.

What You'll Do

You'll contribute across the product development lifecycle and have the opportunity to see your engineering work progress from an idea to a commercialized product.

  • Own mechanical & disposables designs from concept through commercialization, including early concepts, prototypes, testing, validation, and production
  • Design mechanical hardware, components, and flexible systems for single-use bioprocessing applications
  • Translate customer and product requirements into practical, scalable engineering solutions
  • Create 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed engineering drawings
  • Apply GD&T, tolerance analysis, and design-for-manufacturing and assembly principles
  • Perform engineering calculations and analyses to guide design decisions
  • Build and evaluate prototypes and support verification and validation testing
  • Identify technical risks using tools such as FMEA and develop effective mitigation strategies
  • Investigate product and design issues, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions
  • Partner with electrical, systems, manufacturing, quality, and other engineering teams to integrate complete solutions
  • Participate in design reviews and help guide technical decisions
  • Support engineering change orders and product documentation within our quality systems
  • Contribute ideas that improve our products, processes, and ways of working

What You'll Bring

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • 0-1+ years of relevant product development, hardware, mechanical, or systems engineering experience
  • Experience using 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, or equivalent
  • Rudimentary knowledge of GD&T, tolerance analysis, and fundamental mechanical design principles
  • Experience applying engineering calculations and structured problem-solving methods
  • Understanding of common manufacturing processes such as machining, injection molding, and sheet metal fabrication
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and business functions
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel approximately 10% as needed

Experience That Can Help You Succeed

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be valuable:

  • Medical devices or other regulated products
  • Laboratory equipment or scientific instrumentation
  • Automation or electromechanical equipment
  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Bioprocessing or single-use technologies
  • PDM/PLM systems
  • Verification and validation
  • FDA- or ISO-regulated quality systems
  • FMEA, root-cause analysis, and engineering change control
  • Design for manufacturability, assembly, and serviceability

Why This Role Is Different

See Your Designs Become Real Products

You'll have the opportunity to contribute throughout the engineering lifecycle:

Concept → Design → Prototype → Test → Validate → Manufacture → Commercialize → Sustain

That means you'll be able to see how your engineering decisions perform in the real world and continue improving products as they move toward production.

Engineer Products With Meaningful Impact

The systems you'll help develop support the manufacturing of biologics, vaccines, and other therapies. You'll combine mechanical design, hands-on problem solving, cross-functional engineering, testing, manufacturing, and commercialization while contributing to technologies that support our customers' work around the world.

You'll also be part of Thermo Fisher Scientific's global engineering community, with opportunities to learn from colleagues across disciplines, technologies, and locations while continuing to develop your technical career.

We offer competitive remuneration, annual incentive plan bonus scheme, healthcare, company 401k, and a range of employee benefits!
