Role summary

Thomas & Hutton is seeking an EIT III Civil Designer to perform complex civil designs with independent technical judgment. Responsibilities include preparing design calculations and engineering analyses for various civil systems such as drainage, water, wastewater, and pavement. The role involves preparing construction plans, specifications, reports, cost estimates, and permit applications using CADD tools. This position offers moderate client contact and requires the ability to anticipate and resolve problems. The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, 3+ years of land development design experience using Civil 3D, and passed FE/EIT certification.

Bring independent technical judgment to complex, multi-system civil designs. As a Civil Designer III, you'll apply independent judgment to prepare design calculations and engineering analyses across the full range of civil systems, take on a moderate level of direct client contact, and begin mentoring toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. This is a role for EIT/EIs ready to own technically demanding assignments with less day-to-day oversight.

What You'll Do:

  • Use independent judgment to prepare design calculations and engineering analyses on an assignment basis, including drainage/hydrology, storm pipe sizing, detention pond design, water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, sewer pumping systems, sediment control, and pavement design
  • Independently prepare portions of construction plans, specifications, reports, studies, supporting documentation, cost estimates, and permit applications utilizing company and industry-accepted standards
  • Anticipate potential problems on assignments and resolve conflicts before they affect schedule or quality
  • Prepare drawings, exhibits, and details using CADD tools and company graphics standards, with the capability to produce all necessary graphic elements of a moderately complex project without assistance
  • May assist the Project Engineer or Project Manager in preparing cost proposals, project schedules, and cost estimates
  • Carry a moderate level of client contact at the staff level; may attend meetings on behalf of the company with clients, contractors, or resource agencies at the direction of the Project Manager
  • Work as part of a project team, coordinating with others and assisting in determining schedule and budget requirements
  • Receive direction on unconventional or complex problems and a thorough review of completed work for sound application of professional judgment
  • Attain mentored experience toward PE licensure from a licensed civil engineer
  • What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
  • 3+ years of experience designing land development projects using Civil 3D
  • Passed FE/EIT certification; eligible to sit for the PE exam where state rules allow
  • Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D software
  • Clear, confident written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple complex tasks and thrive with reduced day-to-day oversight
  • A client-service mindset, strong initiative, and a collaborative approach to project teams
