Role summary
Valar Atomics is seeking a Director of Electrical - Power Distribution to lead the design and implementation of islanded power systems for their nuclear energy facilities. This role involves building and managing an engineering team responsible for power system planning, substation and transmission design, and protection and relaying. The Director will own the electrical architecture from generator terminals to the customer meter for multi-gigawatt microgrids, ensuring stability, reliability, and safety in a hands-on environment. Key responsibilities include engineering critical components like generator step-up transformers and switchyards, conducting power system studies, defining equipment standards, and managing procurement and commissioning processes. The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with a power systems focus, 15+ years of experience, and 7+ years of team leadership.
About Valar Atomics
At Valar Atomics, we're redefining what's possible in energy. Our mission is to make clean, high-temperature nuclear power scalable—unlocking abundant energy for industry, hydrogen, and next-generation manufacturing. We are a team of builders, engineers, and operators who believe nuclear energy should be fast to deploy, factory-made, and built for the real world. Our first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah will demonstrate how advanced nuclear systems and fuel fabrication can power the future. Joining Valar Atomics means becoming part of a company where autonomy, ownership, and impact exist at every level.
The Team
You will build and lead the Power Distribution engineering organization within Valar Atomics’ Instrumentation, Control & Electrical (IC&E) organization, supporting the gigasite program and the sites that follow it. Your team will span power system planning and studies, substation and transmission design, and protection and relaying. You will work alongside reactor, power conversion, automation and controls, OT, nuclear safety, construction, and customer engineering teams in a hands-on environment where power system design directly determines reactor safety, plant availability, and customer uptime. The team values technical depth, disciplined documentation, and a safety-first culture.
The Role
Valar Atomics is seeking Directors of Electrical - Power Distribution to architect, engineer, and deliver the islanded power systems that carry electricity from hundreds of nuclear units per site to co-located customers. The role owns the electrical system from the generator terminals to the customer meter for microgrids scaling up to 20 GWe. That covers generator step-up transformers, collector and transmission systems, switchyards and substations, protection, and power system stability. There’s no utility grid behind these systems to absorb disturbances, so this role is responsible for making a fleet of reactors and large, dynamic customer loads behave as one stable, reliable power system.
