Role summary

Victor Energy seeks a Driver Development & Compliance Coordinator to ensure the competency and regulatory compliance of all drivers operating various vehicles, including commercial and vocational equipment, on and off-road. This role involves hands-on driver assessments, in-cab coaching, and practical training, focusing on objective skill evaluation and adherence to safety regulations. The coordinator will establish consistent standards for driver qualification and training, work closely with Fleet Compliance, and maintain meticulous records of all assessments and corrective actions. The ideal candidate will have a Class 1 driver's license, 5+ years of commercial driving experience, and 2+ years in fleet safety or driver training.

The Driver Development & Compliance Coordinator is responsible for verifying, building, and maintaining the competency and regulatory compliance of everyone who drives for Victor Energy and its affiliated companies. This includes light-duty pickups and trailers, Class 3 and Class 1 commercial units, and powerline vocational equipment such as digger derricks and bucket trucks, operated both on-highway and off-road on rights-of-way, access roads, and rig mats.

Embedded with field operations, this position delivers hands-on driver assessments, in-cab coaching, and practical training (including Motive electronic logbook use) so that drivers are confirmed competent before they are dispatched, not after an incident. The coordinator sets consistent standards for driver qualification, refresher training, remedial coaching, and return to driving across the company and its affiliates. Working alongside Fleet Compliance, which manages hours of service monitoring, driver qualification files, and abstract reviews, the coordinator provides field compliance checks, coaches drivers referred through those reviews, and keeps accurate, auditable records of every assessment, training session, and corrective action.

EDUCATION / CREDENTIALS & EXPERIENCE

  • Valid Class 1 driver's licence with air brake endorsement and a clean driver's abstract, maintained as a condition of employment

  • 2+ years of experience in fleet safety, transportation compliance, or driver training and evaluation
  • Working knowledge of the National Safety Code (NSC), federal and provincial hours of service regulations, cargo securement (NSC Standard 10), and weights and dimensions requirements
  • Hands-on experience with an electronic logging device (ELD) platform; Motive experience is preferred
  • Commercial driver instructor certification, provincial driver examiner or instructor authorization, or train-the-trainer certification, or the ability to obtain one within six months of hire
  • Defensive driving instructor certification (e.g., PDIC) is an asset
  • Knowledge of Ontario MTO / CVOR, U.S. DOT / FMCSA, IRP, and IFTA requirements is an asset
  • Powerline or utility construction experience, and Health & Safety certifications such as NCSO, CRSP, or CHSC, are an asset

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to assess driving skill objectively in real working conditions and give clear, respectful, practical feedback to drivers of all experience levels, including new and young workers
  • Strong practical knowledge of pre-trip and post-trip inspections, trailer coupling, trailer brake testing, load securement, and safe operation on rights-of-way, slopes, and rig mats
  • Solid understanding of hours of service rules and ELD requirements, with the ability to coach drivers on correct log use and common errors
  • Comfortable with technology and able to teach others to use it, including Motive (driver app and fleet dashboard), SiteDocs, BizTrainer, and the Microsoft Office suite
  • Knowledge of adult-learning principles, competency-based training, and coaching techniques
  • Familiarity with telematics and onboard camera systems, and the ability to use that data for driver coaching

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision while travelling between remote project locations
