Position Summary

Walter Surface Technologies is seeking a hands-on Senior BI Developer to develop, maintain, and support its business intelligence and analytics environment.

Working with Sigma, Power BI, Snowflake, SQL, and dbt, the Senior BI Developer will translate business requirements into accurate, scalable, and well-governed reporting and data solutions. The role combines BI development, data modeling, production support, validation, documentation, and close collaboration with business stakeholders. It will also support the migration of Alteryx workflows and other legacy reporting processes into maintainable Snowflake and dbt solutions.

The successful candidate will be comfortable using AI-assisted development tools, such as Codex or Claude Code, to improve productivity, code quality, documentation, testing, and troubleshooting while following company security and data-governance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain dashboards, reports, datasets, and semantic models using Sigma and Power BI.
  • Translate business requirements into intuitive and scalable BI solutions supported by consistent measures, dimensions, and business definitions.
  • Develop and maintain SQL-based transformations and analytical models in Snowflake.
  • Contribute to dbt models, testing, documentation, and development standards.
  • Monitor critical reports, datasets, refreshes, gateways, and related processes.
  • Troubleshoot reporting failures, performance concerns, access problems, and data-quality issues across reporting and data layers.
  • Assess Alteryx workflows and migrate appropriate business logic into maintainable SQL and dbt models.
  • Validate and reconcile new or migrated solutions against source systems, existing results, and approved business rules.
  • Use Git, GitHub, and AI-assisted development tools such as Codex or Claude Code to support version control, code review, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and controlled deployment.
  • Apply appropriate judgment when using AI tools and protect confidential, proprietary, and sensitive information in accordance with company policies.
  • Maintain documentation covering data models, business rules, dependencies, ownership, lineage, and support procedures.
  • Partner with Finance, Sales and Marketing, Supply Chain, Operations, and other functions on requirements, testing, training, deployment, and adoption.
  • Identify opportunities to consolidate redundant reporting, reduce technical debt, and improve performance, reliability, and maintainability.

Qualifications

  • Strong SQL skills and the ability to work with complex relational datasets.
  • Hands-on experience developing and supporting dashboards, reports, semantic models, or governed analytical datasets using Sigma, Power BI, or another modern BI platform.
  • Experience working with Snowflake or a comparable cloud data platform.
  • Knowledge of dbt or another SQL-based data transformation framework.
  • Practical understanding of dimensional modeling, fact and dimension tables, data warehousing, and ETL or ELT concepts.
  • Experience validating and reconciling data across source systems, transformations, and reports.
  • Familiarity with Git, GitHub, code review, and controlled deployment practices.
  • Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Codex, Claude Code, or comparable tools is considered an asset.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated code and content for accuracy, security, maintainability, and alignment with business requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with careful attention to data accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to manage work from requirements and design through testing, deployment, documentation, and support.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain data and reporting concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with Alteryx workflow migration, ERP data, manufacturing or distribution data, data governance, or automated testing would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to balance production support responsibilities with planned development and modernization work.

Candidates are not expected to have experience with every preferred technology. Strong BI, SQL, data-modeling, problem-solving, and business-partnership capabilities, together with the ability to learn Walter’s environment, are most important.

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Engineering, Finance, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Minimum two (2) years of progressive experience in business intelligence development, reporting, analytics, data modeling, or a comparable role.

  • Demonstrated experience developing, deploying, and supporting business intelligence solutions.

  • Experience working directly with stakeholders in Finance, Sales, Operations, Supply Chain, or other business functions.

  • Experience with data and transactions from an ERP system in a manufacturing or distribution environment is an asset.

  • Bilingual proficiency in French and English, both written and spoken due to interactions with internal & external stakeholders.
