Role summary

Waymo, an autonomous driving technology company, is seeking a Software Engineer for its Marketplace team. This role focuses on building and scaling the core economic engine for Waymo's ride-hailing services, including trip request management, rider-vehicle matching, pricing, and vehicle positioning. The engineer will develop infrastructure for training and deploying ML models for real-time decision-making in pricing, matching, and positioning, and create systems for analyzing deployed models. A BS in Computer Science with 4+ years of backend programming and distributed systems experience is required. Preferred qualifications include C++, MS in Computer Science, experience with low-latency, large-scale user-facing systems, ML/optimization infrastructure, and prior experience in ride-hailing or marketplace companies.

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

The Marketplace team builds the core decision systems that keep Waymo running smoothly. They design the algorithms that match riders to vehicles, optimize routing, balance supply and demand, forecast rider demand, and power dynamic pricing. Their work ensures the fleet stays efficient, riders get fast pickups, and the AV network operates safely and profitably across cities.

You will:

  • Implement and scale the core economic engine for Waymo's ride-hailing commercial services. This collection of systems manages trip requests; matches right vehicles to riders; calculates the price of rides; positions Waymo’s vehicle for future demands.

  • Developing infrastructure for automatically training and deploying sophisticated optimization and prediction ML models to make real-time decisions for pricing, matching, and positioning.

  • Create experimentation, monitoring and analysis infrastructure for analyzing ongoing deployed models.
  • Partnering with product data scientists to develop and productionize pricing and matching models for Waymo
  • You have:

  • BS degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience
  • 4+ years of experience programming in backend coding languages
  • Experience in building backend distributed system
  • We prefer:

  • Experience in C++
  • MS in Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience in developing low latency, large-scale, user facing distributed systems
  • Experience in developing machine learning/optimization infrastructure and pipelines
  • Prior experience building and deploying ML / Optimization models into production environments
  • Experience at another Ride hailing or Marketplace company
  • The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is listed below. Actual starting pay will be based on job-related factors, including exact work location, experience, relevant training and education, and skill level.
