Role summary

SpaceXSI is hiring a Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) for their high-performance data centers in Memphis. This full-time, onsite, hourly role involves inspecting welds on industrial piping and structural steel, ensuring quality against codes, WPS, and drawings. You will interpret ASME and AWS standards, monitor various welding processes (GTAW, SMAW, FCAW, GMAW), verify welder qualifications, and oversee NDT and testing. Responsibilities include documenting findings, reviewing contractor practices, and adhering to safety protocols. Preferred qualifications include field inspection experience, knowledge of ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1, NDT Level II certification, and prior data center construction experience. Extensive travel and ability to work in industrial environments are required.

CERTIFIED WELD INSPECTOR

We are seeking a Certified Weld Inspector to support the buildout of SpaceXSI's high-performance data centers. In this hands-on role, you will inspect welds on industrial piping and structural steel and keep quality moving on our next-generation AI supercomputing infrastructure. You will work closely with welding, mechanical, structural, and operations teams to verify weld quality from construction through turnover.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Inspect welds in progress and at completion on large-bore industrial piping and structural steel, and accept or reject them against the applicable code, welding procedure specification (WPS), and drawings
  • Interpret AWS, ASME, and project specifications against isometric, spool, structural, and arrangement drawings
  • Monitor GTAW, SMAW, FCAW, and GMAW work and confirm it is performed to the qualified welding procedure
  • Verify and document welder qualifications before a welder is released to weld on the package
  • Check joint design and preparation, fit-up, cleanliness, tack quality, preheat, interpass temperature, and interpass and final cleaning
  • Verify base metal and filler metal against the applicable specifications, including control and handling of welding consumables
  • Recommend and verify repairs, then visually inspect the completed repair before the joint is released
  • Oversee nondestructive examination and any required proof or mechanical testing, and confirm fabrication and inspection records are complete
  • Record inspection results and communicate findings to construction, welding, and engineering
  • Review contractor welding and inspection practices on site
  • Follow hot-work, LOTO, PPE, and site rules; report rejected welds, unsafe conditions, and drawing conflicts immediately
  • Support punch-list and NDE hold points through system turnover

    • BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification
  • High school diploma or equivalency certificate

    • PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience visually inspecting welded industrial piping and/or structural steel in the field
  • Working knowledge of ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1
  • Nondestructive testing Level II, in line with ASNT SNT-TC-1A, in visual testing (VT), magnetic particle (MT), liquid penetrant (PT), ultrasonic (UT), or phased array ultrasonic (PAUT)
  • Prior experience on data center, industrial, or heavy-civil construction sites
  • Willingness to work at heights, outdoors, and on a changing data center construction site
  • Strong safety mindset and willingness to follow site procedures, including hot-work permits and inspection hold points
  • Willingness to work extended hours, nights, and weekends during critical construction windows
  • OSHA 10 or equivalent training
  • Ability to read isometric, spool, structural, and weld-map drawings and to record inspection results on a computer

    • ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel extensively to SpaceXSI data center construction sites and remain onsite during peak construction phases
  • Capability to work in industrial environments, climb ladders and stairs, lift up to 25 lb, stand and walk for a full shift, and wear PPE for extended periods, with or without reasonable accommodation
  • This is an onsite full-time, hourly position with overtime
