Role summary

Alchemi is seeking an AI Engineer to build and ship AI agents for drug development. This role involves taking real-world workflows, understanding expert processes, and creating agents that can be trusted by demanding customers. You will be responsible for the end-to-end development of these agents, including tools, retrieval, orchestration, and model selection, as well as writing evaluations to prove their effectiveness. The position emphasizes strong Python skills, good engineering habits, and a fast learning and shipping cadence. This is an opportunity to make a significant impact in a small, high-trust team, directly contributing to accelerating drug development timelines.

About Alchemi

It takes more than a decade and over $2 billion to bring a new drug to market. Alchemi builds AI that helps drug development teams move faster, and we already work with some of the largest pharma companies and CROs in the world.

The role

The agents are the product. You'll build them end to end: take a real workflow, figure out how experts actually do it, and ship an agent good enough that some of the most demanding customers in the world trust it. Small team, huge scope, and your work goes in front of customers within weeks.

What you'll do

  • Build and ship agents, from tools and retrieval to orchestration and model choice.
  • Write the evals that prove they work, and keep raising the bar.
  • Work side by side with our scientists and customers.
  • Turn one-off wins into reusable pieces of the platform.
  • What we're looking for
  • You've built LLM apps or agents that real people use, not just demos.
  • Strong Python and good engineering habits.
  • You ship fast and learn faster.
  • You're obsessed with how you know something actually works.
  • Early in your career is fine. We care about slope, not years.

Nice to have

  • Side projects, hackathon wins or open-source work you're proud of.
  • How we work
  • Small team, low process, high trust. Two-week release cadence, design specs reviewed carefully, and an active resistance to ticket sprawl. Based in New York City, with daily overlap across a team that spans Pacific Time to Western Europe.
  • Why join
  • Our goal is to cut years off clinical development timelines. Alchemi has already supported more than 3,000 studies for the top development teams in pharma. We're a small team of experts. We keep talent density high and work closely across every part of the product, from first idea to deployment.
  • Impact — Your work goes straight into the regulated workflows that decide how fast drugs reach patients.
  • Excellence — Work alongside a highly skilled team in a fast-paced, high-impact environment.
  • Ownership — Help shape product direction, how we work and what we build next.

What we offer

  • Salary and equity: Competitive salary and meaningful equity, with options weighted toward ownership if that's what you want.
  • Health — Best-in-class health and dental insurance.
  • Time off: 4 weeks of paid vacation plus public holidays, paid sick leave and parental leave.
  • Location — Based in New York City.
  • Equipment — A MacBook, external monitor and accessories.
  • Growth — Room to learn and develop in a cutting-edge field.
