Role summary

Bandwidth is seeking a Software Engineer to design, build, and operate voice services, including call control, media streaming, and WebRTC. You will contribute to APIs and SDKs for developers, collaborate with cross-functional teams on features like conferencing and call recording, and troubleshoot high-volume, low-latency voice infrastructure. The role requires 2-4 years of experience, proficiency in Java or a similar language, and familiarity with REST APIs, webhooks, asynchronous systems, cloud infrastructure (AWS), and SQL. Experience with real-time communications technologies is a plus. Bandwidth offers a collaborative culture and comprehensive benefits.

Who We Are:

At Bandwidth, we shape how the world connects. We're the global communications software company and Tier 1 network operator with global reach. The voice, messaging, and emergency services infrastructure behind the brands and apps you use every day.

Because we own the network we build on, the problems you'll solve here are bigger, more complex, and more impactful. And as communications shifts to AI, we're the infrastructure layer making it possible.

We call ourselves BANDmates because building something this big takes collaboration, different perspectives, and the freedom to bring your authentic self to the table.

We're experts who speak like humans. Ready to build what's next? #JoinTheBand

What You'll Do:

  • Design, build, and operate services that power inbound/outbound call control, BXML processing, webhooks, and real-time media (e.g., WebSocket media streaming, WebRTC endpoints via BRTC).
  • Contribute to APIs and SDKs (REST, webhooks, SDKs across Node, Python, Java, and others) that developers use to build voice applications.
  • Work cross-functionally with product managers, senior engineers, and support teams to ship features like conferencing, TTS/IVR, call recording and transcription, and answering machine detection.
  • Troubleshoot and improve the performance, reliability, and scalability of high-volume, low-latency voice infrastructure.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and on-call rotations; write tests and documentation to a high bar.
  • Use AI tools effectively across the development lifecycle, holding AI-generated code to the same security, style, and compliance standards as human-written code.

    • What You Need:

  • 2–4 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally with distributed systems or APIs operating at scale.
  • Proficiency in Java (or a comparable statically typed language) and comfort working with REST APIs, webhooks, and asynchronous/event-driven systems.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (AWS or similar) and SQL/relational data stores.
  • Solid debugging and analytical skills — able to trace issues through multi-service, real-time systems.
  • Clear communicator who can collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Eagerness to learn telecom/real-time media concepts (SIP, WebRTC, media streaming) — prior experience is a plus, not a requirement.

    • Bonus Points:

  • Experience with real-time communications technologies: WebRTC, SIP, RTP/media streaming, or VoIP.
  • Exposure to monitoring/observability tooling (e.g., Datadog) and infrastructure as code (Terraform).
  • Familiarity with modern CI/CD practices (e.g., GitHub Actions).
  • Experience with high-throughput, low-latency systems or telecom/CPaaS platforms.

    • The Whole Person Promise:

At Bandwidth, we’re pretty proud of our corporate culture, which is rooted in our “Whole Person Promise.” We promise all employees that they can have meaningful work AND a full life, and we provide a work environment geared toward enriching your body, mind, and spirit. How do we do that? Well…

  • 100% company-paid Medical, Vision, & Dental coverage for you and your family with low deductibles and low out-of-pocket expenses.
  • All new hires receive four weeks of PTO.
  • PTO Embargo. When you take time off (of any kind!) you’re embargoed from working. Bandmates and managers are not allowed to interrupt your PTO – not even with email.
  • Additional PTO can be earned throughout the year through volunteer hours and Bandwidth challenges.
  • “Mahalo moments” program grants additional time off for life’s most important moments like graduations, buying a first home, getting married, wedding anniversaries (every five years), and the birth of a grandchild.
  • 90-Minute Workout Lunches and unlimited meetings with our very own nutritionist.

    • Are you excited about the position and its responsibilities, but not sure if you’re 100% qualified? Do you feel you can work to help us crush the mission? If you answered ‘yes’ to both of these questions, we encourage you to apply! You won’t want to miss the opportunity to be a part of the BAND.
