Role summary
Formlabs is seeking a Materials Scientist to build world-class SLS materials for 3D printing. This role involves leading research, developing next-gen solutions, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve material performance. The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of materials science, polymer product development, and hands-on experience with thermoplastic engineering. They should be passionate about rigorous experimentation, data analysis, and autonomous work with good documentation practices. A relevant science or engineering degree is required, with bonus skills in 3D printing materials development and programming languages like Python, Matlab, or SQL.
A 3D printer is one of the most demanding machines you can build.
Lasers, optics, precision motion, thermals, airflow, materials handling, chemistry, sensing, controls, and software all have to work at micron-scale precision, for thousands of layers, with almost no tolerance for error. Making that work reliably is an extraordinary engineering problem.
That’s what we do.
At Formlabs, we’re building 3D printers that are changing the way things get made. We have the smartest minds across every engineering discipline, and the technology they’re building is deployed at more than 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA.
Materials development presents one of the greatest opportunities to innovate in 3D printing, unlocking new applications in different industries such as engineering, consumer, manufacturing, automotive and healthcare. Our materials science team works closely with product management, hardware and software teams to develop new materials that push the boundaries of what can be done with 3D printing.
If you are a scientist or engineer with experience in polymer development who’s excited to break new ground in an industry that’s moving at lightning speed, we want you as an SLS Materials Scientist.
