About The Role
We are seeking a talented and experienced Senior Android Engineer to join OpenAI's Applied Foundations team. In this role, you will be instrumental in building and maintaining the core mobile experiences that enable millions of users worldwide to interact confidently with our products. Your primary focus will be on developing high-quality, reusable Android foundations that support various product teams across OpenAI, ensuring they can ship features rapidly without compromising on security, reliability, or user trust. You will own complex client-side systems, including UI, networking, local state management, and integrations with payment and platform-specific services such as Apple. Collaborating closely with backend, product, and safety teams, you will help shape the architecture that underpins OpenAI's mobile ecosystem at a global scale, contributing to a seamless and secure user experience.
Qualifications

• Up to 6 years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong background in Android development.
• Proven track record of building and maintaining high-quality Android applications in production environments.
• Fluent in Kotlin and/or Java, with a solid understanding of Android development tools and architecture components.
• Deep understanding of performance optimization, security best practices, and user experience design in mobile applications.
• Experience working collaboratively across cross-functional teams, including product managers, designers, and backend engineers.
• Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
• Passion for creating reliable, scalable, and secure mobile solutions that meet high standards of quality and user trust.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain core Android components and frameworks that support OpenAI's mobile applications.
• Implement features related to user onboarding, account management, family sharing, payments, safety, and platform-specific integrations.
• Collaborate with backend teams to develop robust networking and data synchronization solutions.
• Ensure all mobile applications adhere to security standards, privacy policies, and best practices for user data protection.
• Optimize app performance, responsiveness, and battery efficiency to deliver a seamless user experience.
• Contribute to the development of reusable Android foundations and libraries that accelerate product development across teams.
• Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to uphold high-quality engineering standards.
• Stay current with emerging Android technologies and industry trends to continuously improve our mobile offerings.
