Role summary

Scout Veterinary Urgent Care is seeking a Veterinary Hospital Director to build and lead their new Brookfield, Wisconsin location from the ground up. This high-visibility role involves pre-opening responsibilities like hiring the founding team and developing launch plans, followed by ongoing operational leadership. Key ownership areas include hospital launch, P&L management, client experience, local marketing and referral relations, people leadership, scheduling, recruiting, and inter-departmental communication. The ideal candidate has 10+ years in the veterinary industry, prior leadership experience, and is a strong problem-solver comfortable with ambiguity and data-driven decision-making. Preferred qualifications include P&L ownership, new hospital opening experience, and established local relationships.

Scout Veterinary Urgent Care was built on a simple belief: veterinary professionals deserve careers that are sustainable, rewarding, and built to last. We're a growing, multi-location urgent care practice in the Chicago area, and we're bringing Scout to Wisconsin with our first Milwaukee-area hospital in Brookfield, opening in early 2027. Our clinical teams are tight-knit, engaged, and invested in the work. Our leadership is accessible, involved, and collaborative. If you want a place where workflows are buttoned up, the culture is intentional, and the people around you actually care, this might be it.

About this role:

We're looking for a Veterinary Hospital Director to build and lead Scout Brookfield from the ground up. This is a high-visibility, high-accountability role that sits where people, process, and performance meet. It's also a chance to shape a hospital from day one.

You'll start before the doors open. You'll help hire the founding team, get the clinic ready to launch, and introduce Scout to the local veterinary community. After opening, you'll be the hospital's operational lead. You'll make sure the clinic runs smoothly, the team is supported, clients are taken care of, and the numbers make sense.

You'll work closely with our Executive Leadership and Clinical Support Teams, but you'll be Scout's leader on the ground in Brookfield.

This is not a behind-the-scenes role. You'll be in the clinic and out in the community, and your fingerprints will be on nearly every part of how Scout Brookfield runs.

What you'll own:

  • Hospital Launch: Work with our de novo team on the Brookfield opening. That means building the founding team, onboarding, getting the clinic ready to open, and carrying out the local launch plan.
  • Operations & P&L: Daily hospital operations, including staffing, scheduling, inventory, equipment, and budget. You'll own the payroll line and report monthly on revenue and variance.
  • Client Experience: You're the first point of contact for non-medical client concerns. You'll coach CSRs on front-of-house workflows and bring in medical leadership when an issue becomes clinical.
  • Local Marketing & Referral Relations: Be Scout's face in the Brookfield community. You'll visit local primary care and specialty practices, represent Scout at community events, and keep our local presence strong. Our Referral Relations and Marketing teams set the strategy and support you remotely. You make it happen locally.
  • People Leadership: Regular performance feedback, accountability documentation, and support plans in partnership with HR. You'll also do the everyday culture work that keeps people around.
  • Scheduling & Staffing: Manage schedules for all non-DVM clinical staff and handle coverage, attendance, and staffing gaps.
  • Recruiting & Onboarding: Partner with Talent Acquisition on hiring and own the orientation experience for new team members.
  • Communication & Coordination: Be the operational link between the clinic team and leadership. Run all-staff meetings, communicate changes, and get ahead of issues before they become problems.
  • About you:

    Required:

  • 10+ years in the veterinary industry
  • Prior experience in a lead, supervisor, or management role
  • High school diploma
  • Preferred:

  • Experience owning or managing against a P&L or operational budget
  • Experience opening a new hospital or practice
  • Established relationships in the Milwaukee-area veterinary community
  • Background in customer service
  • Leadership certification
  • The right person for this role:

  • Is a strong problem-solver who doesn't get rattled by the daily chaos of a busy urgent care
  • Is energized by building something new, and is comfortable owning decisions without someone down the hall
  • Communicates directly and without judgment, even in hard conversations
  • Knows how to hold a team accountable and still be the person people want to come to
  • Enjoys meeting people and representing the hospital in the community
  • Is comfortable reading financial reports and using data to make decisions
  • Can be present and approachable on the floor while keeping a clear leadership presence
  • Leads with humility and integrity
  • Values being on a team and looks for ways to collaborate
  • Work Style & Culture Fit:

Scout is growing, so things move fast and plans change. We're building processes as we go, and this role needs someone who's energized by that.

You'll be in the clinic regularly and out visiting referral partners and community events. Some work can be done off-site, but this isn't a remote job. Leading up to opening, you'll be on-site to manage the launch. Sometimes you'll need to step in and cover front-of-house shifts. It won't happen often, but it's part of the job.

We're looking for someone who steps up without being asked and goes beyond the role to help the team succeed, like the other leaders at Scout.

Salary: $75,000–$85,000/year, depending on experience. Compensation grows with your scope: as Scout grows in Wisconsin, so does the opportunity.

    Benefits:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield, Principal)
  • 401(k) with company matching
  • 3 weeks of PTO
  • Leadership development and continuing education funds
  • Lifestyle spending fund (available at 1 year)
  • Location:

Scout Brookfield, Brookfield, WI. This is Scout's first Wisconsin hospital. If you're excited about shaping what a new clinic looks like from day one, this is that opportunity.
