About The Role
As a Lead Software Engineer at Humana, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM) technology. This position is ideal for a seasoned backend and API engineer who is passionate about building resilient, secure, enterprise-grade systems that support critical healthcare functions. You will serve as a technical authority within a modern, agile engineering environment, guiding architectural decisions, driving quality standards, and delivering scalable backend and API solutions. Your expertise will directly impact the efficiency and reliability of Humana’s PBM platform, which supports millions of members, pharmacists, and clinical partners. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers and architects, to refine technical strategies, ensure system security and scalability, and mentor junior engineers. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead technical initiatives that improve healthcare outcomes on a large scale, fostering innovation and engineering excellence within a forward-thinking organization.
Qualifications

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, particularly within large-scale or enterprise environments
  • 2+ years of technical leadership experience, such as team lead, senior lead, or tech lead roles
  • Strong expertise in backend API development and modern engineering practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, and cloud-native design
  • Proven ability to build resilient, secure, and scalable APIs and data flows
  • Experience in designing and implementing high-performance backend services
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for creating solutions that enhance healthcare services
  • Effective communication skills for technical documentation and cross-team collaboration

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical delivery and refinement by guiding story refinement and technical planning, translating complex initiatives into scalable backend/API work
  • Design, develop, and maintain mission-critical APIs and backend services that support Humana’s PBM ecosystem, ensuring high performance, security, and data integrity
  • Champion engineering excellence through rigorous code reviews, best-practice coaching, automation enhancements, and proactive risk identification
  • Ensure systems meet security, performance, and architectural standards by collaborating with architects and stakeholders
  • Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including API contracts, architectural diagrams, and operational runbooks
  • Communicate risks, tradeoffs, and technical decisions effectively across teams to facilitate alignment and transparency
  • Mentor and coach engineering team members, fostering a culture of craftsmanship, continuous learning, and technical excellence
