Cloud Engineer

Spend your days supporting one of the most ambitious hybrid cloud transformations in higher education at the University of South Carolina. Located in the heart of Columbia, SC, USC’s Division of Information Technology is modernizing its infrastructure to support cloud-first services, AI readiness, and enterprise resiliency. As a Cloud Engineer, you will work hands-on with Azure, virtualization, and automation technologies that directly power the university’s academic, research, and administrative missions—while collaborating with a forward-thinking team shaping USC’s future-state IT environment.

The Cloud Engineer is responsible for implementing, operating, and improving USC’s hybrid cloud and virtualization platforms. This role focuses on execution—supporting Azure adoption, VMware lifecycle management, automation initiatives, and resiliency improvements—while partnering closely with the Infrastructure Architect and systems teams.

Key Responsibilities

- Administer and support cloud platforms (Azure preferred), including provisioning, monitoring, backup, and lifecycle management
- Maintain and optimize virtualization environments, including VMware compute and capacity planning
- Develop automation and scripting solutions to improve consistency, scalability, and operational efficiency
Support disaster recovery, backup validation, and infrastructure resiliency initiatives

What We’re Looking For

- 3–5+ years of experience in systems engineering, cloud engineering, or virtualization platforms
- Hands-on experience with Azure, AWS, or similar cloud services
- Working knowledge of VMware, infrastructure automation, and scripting tools
Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to collaborate across technical teams

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience.
