Role summary

Zoox is seeking an experienced Staff Cloud Engineer to join its IT Platform team, focusing on enhancing AWS services for its Autonomous Mobility mission. This role involves managing the relationship with cloud providers, optimizing cloud costs, and implementing AWS best practices across security, operations, cost, resiliency, and performance. The engineer will also contribute to establishing a Cloud Center of Excellence and refining the hybrid cloud strategy. Key technical skills include deep AWS/GCP expertise, Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred), automation, observability, cost optimization, container orchestration (EKS), and cloud security. Collaboration with cross-functional teams and leadership/mentorship of junior members are also important aspects of the role.

Zoox is expanding its focus within the IT Platform team to further our mission of providing Autonomous Mobility. We are seeking an experienced Cloud Engineer to support and enhance our use of AWS services. This role involves working cross-functionally with multiple engineering teams to ensure the best practices in cloud infrastructure.

In This Role, You Will:

  • Technical and Business Relationship: Maintain and manage the technical and business relationship between Zoox and its cloud providers.
  • Cost Management: Understand and maintain costs associated with Zoox's cloud platforms, ensuring cost efficiency and optimization.
  • AWS Best Practices: Implement AWS best practices for security, operations, cost management, resiliency, and performance across Zoox's cloud platforms.
  • Cloud Center of Excellence: Establish and lead a cloud center of excellence to drive innovation, efficiency, and best practices in cloud infrastructure.
  • Hybrid Cloud Strategy: Collaborate with multiple engineering teams to refine and enhance Zoox's hybrid cloud strategy.

    • Qualifications:

  • AWS/GCP Expertise: Strong understanding of cloud products and services in a production environment, including infrastructure, capacity planning, scalability, backups, storage, security best practices, and emerging technologies.
  • IaC: Orchestration, Best practices, delivery, support self service user community - Terraform preferred but CloudFormation would be considered
  • Automation Skills: Proven understanding of AI based software development best practices, programming/scripting languages, and Infrastructure as Code patterns
  • Observability: Building dashboards and alerting systems, understanding and implementing observability frameworks
  • Cost Optimization: Proven ability to identify and implement cost optimization practices within AWS ecosystems, including total cost of ownership, cloud cost optimization tools, and cost reporting services.
  • Cloud Computing Strategies: Deep understanding of cloud computing strategies and architecture, such as multi-cloud, hybrid and multi-user environments.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, including Engineering, Operations, and Business Units, to achieve business objectives.
  • Communication Skills: Expert written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to communicate effectively with all levels of business.

    • Bonus Qualifications:

  • Security Best Practices: Experience with AWS security best practices and compliance.
  • Team Leadership: Proven track record of working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, with the ability to lead and mentor junior team members.
  • Kubernetes: Experience designing, deploying, and running containerized services, mostly on EKS
  • AI/ML Services: Understanding of AI/ML AWS services and best practices.
